The third episode of the Impiraressa Podcast is a radiodrama, a darkly humorous and satirical exploration of life, death, beauty, and transformation. Entitled "Death-à-Porter", this was originally a novella I wrote for a fashion competition organized by the Prada fashion house (it didn't win the main award, but it won an extremely heavy Prada book that I use as a press for small arts and crafts project, what else could I do with it?); the short story was republished independently last year, so some Irenebrination readers may remember it.
The story revolves around two aspiring makeup students, Francesca and Seb who are struggling with debts and land a job at a funeral parlor. Despite their worries, fears and prejudices about the job, they discover a newfound fascination with the art of thanato-aesthetic. Their work takes them on a unique and unconventional path, involving the deceased as their canvas.
As the protagonists become proficient in their work, they encounter a range of scenarios, but their lives take an unexpected turn when they decide to turn one of their jobs into their end of the year project and decide to submit it to competition. Selected among the finalists, they end up encountering a bizarre world, realizing the absurdity of the fashion industry and its fixation on appearances, superficiality, and empty promises, something they can not reconcile with the work they have been carrying out at the funeral parlor.
The story behind "Death-à-Porter" is also a metaphor to remind us all that, when the purposes of one's life shift, it doesn't signify the demise of one's dreams, but rather their evolution into something new.
