This post is directly linked to a previous one about contemporary shoes being pilfered from – sorry, I mean, inspired by - '50s sandals. Accessories seem to resist any kind of financial crisis, so let's move from shoes to bags.
Fashionistas have been enthusing a lot recently about Diane Von Furstenberg's collection of “Fetish Box” bags, clutches inspired by art that will be the highlight of the designer's accessory collection this Fall. A few of them borrow from the world of art and in particular from Surrealism, but there is one specific clutch that calls back to mind the early clock bags made in the late '30s.
The clock/watch bag (especially the round clock bag) is definitely not a new item as quite a few designers relaunched it throughout the decades, while crafty and skilled fashionistas often come up with this simple yet effective design recreating it in the materials of their choice and often conceiving it as an Alice in Wonderland tribute bag.
This design has got a long history since it was first made in France but it was popular also in Italy where it spawned an interesting trend despite the Fascist regime called at the time for a less extravagant and all Italian fashion that bore no derivation from France. This image is taken for example from my collection of Lei magazine (October 1937) and it proves the bag was already popular then.
The clock design was also applied to hats in the same decade as proved by this 1939 image (clock hats also reappeared every now and then in more recent decades).

DVF's clutch looks lovely, but, since this is not such an exclusive design, my advice would be, make your own clock bag or – even better – scout for an original one on the Internet, at second-hand markets or in the attic of a relative/friend.
In fact since the '30s-'40s will probably never go out of fashion, dig out of attics and old wardrobes whatever you may have that can be dated around these decades and make it yours. Guess such lost and found gems will be much more original and exclusive than what's in the shops at the moment.
