The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) stated that so far more than 2 million people fled Ukraine since the Russian offensive began. It's International Women's Day and it is impossible not to think about all Ukrainian women who are paying a high price from this invasion.
While some of them decided to remain and fight, others left the men behind and fled to other countries with their children: most people we see arriving in countries such as Poland or Italy, standing in the cold on the platforms of train stations, are women with young children. First Lady Olena Zelenska praised the courage of women on her Instagram account and wrote in her posts about the terrifying effects of this devastating invasion.
Zelenska often posted about women and children living in bomb shelters and basements, she mentioned the casualties, especially children, and the way the little patients from Okhmatdyt National Children's Specialized Hospital, handling the most complicated cases in the country, have been treated in bomb shelters in the last few days.
Reminding us all that this war is taking place in the heart of Europe and we can not underestimate its danger, Zelenska posted on her account an open letter to the Global Media, stating: "Our roads are flooded with refugees. Look into the eyes of these tired women and children who carry with them the pain and heartache of leaving loved ones and life as they knew behind. The men bringing them to the borders shedding tears to break apart their families, but bravely returning to fight for our freedom."
So, on this sombre International Women's Day, check out Zelenska's Instagram account, keep updated with the news and get informed about how you may be able to actively help from your country with donations that may go directly to Ukraine or may support refugees in their journey, especially women with children.
