In yesterday's post we mentioned Georges Lepape as some of his works are currently included in Sotheby's auction of Karl Lagerfeld's Estate.
As a follow up, check out in particular these three works by Lepape featured in the auction: "Elégante au théatre" (gouache and pencil on paper, 1912) "Elégante au manteau" (gouache, watercolour and pencil on paper, 1915) and "Femme de profil dans les airs" (gouache, watercolour, ink and pencil on paper, undated).
The first one seems to be a grand celebration of the festive season with the lady portrayed in an exotic turban and coat à la Paul Poiret in bright and bold gold yellow tones; the second is almost a representation of winter, with a lady wearing a voluminous fur-trimmed blue coat that seems to fill the entire page.
The third is a unique sketch and it doesn't look like a work by Lepape: rather than being portrayed in a static pose and trapped in a frame, the woman in this sketch is an ode to movement. She is wearing what looks like an aviator suit, long blue gloves and a long scarf, a style reminiscent of Amelia Earhart; she has taken off her hat and her ruffled short hair contribute to give her figure a dynamic power, as she seems suspended in the air, as if she were jumping among grey clouds of smoke,
These sketches are interesting as they portray three very different women - from glamorous and elegant to dynamic and modern. Which one inspires you the most?
