Looking for a cool DIY project for yourself or for an innovative Christmas present for a friend who's into fashion? Check out the sewing kits on the Pattern Project site.
The South London micro-factory manufactures and sells ready-to-wear clothing (including tops, dresses and biodegradable briefs) produced locally and "Sew-It-Yourself Kits".
Each kit includes all the necessary materials to make a garment, but the most original kit available at the moment is the one for the Flowertwist 'Hex' bag by Roberts | Wood.
Founded by Katie Roberts-Wood following her graduation from the Royal College of Art, Roberts | Wood is a design studio with an innovative approach to textiles and construction and a focus on sustainable, flexible production methods. The studio produces limited-edition hand-crafted pieces, and specialises in coming up with alternative solutions in garment construction.
The bag (measuring approximately 48cm in diameter) is an example of the studio's passion for innovative solutions: it represents a sculptural, oversized twisted flower, inspired by patterns and structures in nature.
The kit enables makers to create in 4 to 6 hours (if you're an intermediate sewist) he designer piece at home, with 8 easy-to-follow stages: the kit contains 17 x fabric pattern pieces (the bag is available in green or black) with instructions etched onto the fabric, cotton thread, a Roberts I Wood label and dust cover, an instruction booklet and access to a special masterclass sew-along video with the designer.
The pre-cut fabric pieces, etched construction lines and reference numbers make the process straight-forward, providing a simplified way of tackling an otherwise complex construction.
All the kits and clothes by the Pattern Project are made on order, to ensure there's no wasted fabric and no excess inventory. Enjoy your "Sew-It-Yourself" session!
