Waste is a key issue in our times, yet, as seen in previous posts, there are ways to employ waste materials to create new products, but also art installations that raise awareness about this problem.
To mark the G7 summit in Cornwall in June, we saw for example "Mount Recyclemore", a piece made of e-waste, while last weekend a softer sculpture was installed in London's Grosvenor Square to mark Glasgow's UN Climate Change Conference (COP26), running through November 12.
Dubbed "Messy the COP Ness Monster", the five metre-long, three-metre tall, sustainably-built sculpture shaped like the iconic Loch Ness monster, comprises 800 old pairs of recycled jeans and other sustainable materials.
A collaboration between artist Billie Achilleos, known for his animals made with leather accessories created for the shop windows of various luxury label stores, WaterBear, a streaming platform dedicated to documentaries and shows about saving the planet, and circular denim brand MUD Jeans, the sculpture was made with the help of a group of volunteers.
Messy will raise awareness about the polluting effects of denim on the environment, while reminding passers-by that a more circular lifestyle is genuinely possible and it's therefore not a hoax like the Loch Ness monster.
