Sustainability has become a priority for a few fashion houses, especially for younger brands, but also for interior design projects, as proved by a recent installation by Samira Boon. The Dutch architect, textile and accessory designer created a special piece for the Entrance Lounge of the Kunstlinie theatre and cultural centre in Almere, The Netherlands.
Designed by the internationally renowned Japanese architectural firm SANAA, the Kunstlinie, partly anchored to the shore grounds and partially resting on piles over the water, hoovers over the Weerwater Lake.
Samira Boon's installation is entitled "Intertidal" and it is inspired by this sort of suspension between the sea and the land, the inside and the outside, it consists indeed in a garden of sculptures made from recycled linen and in particular from old bed linen.
This sturdy material in an off-white colour is employed to create a series of elements recreating a coral reef-like structure. Visitors can walk among them, a concept inspired by Richard Serra's open sculptures, while listening to atmospheric soundscapes.
The recycled linen material also allowed the designer to play around with another dichotomy - stiff / soft - since the origami-like configurations of geometrical corals look as if they were made with a rigid and hard material, but the base material to make them, linen, is soft.
While this is an "artificial" coral garden, it represents a sustainable ecosystem in which fibres are allowed to have a second life. the recycled textiles for this installation were transformed into a structural and durable biocomposite material designed by Studio Samira Boon for interiors and called BioFold (the new name for the studio's former research BiOrigami).
BioFold mainly employs non-reusable textiles, such as jute coffee bags, that are otherwise hard to recycle, alongside biobased plastics in a new biocomposite material. By employing Japanese origami and digital production techniques, Studio Samira Boon transforms the biocomposite material into a functional, sensory and flexible architectural product with a 3-dimensionality added that guarantees flexibility and excellent acoustic properties.
