Once you're past December and January, you feel that the worst of Winter is behind you, but you still need some warm clothes. So let's try to look stylish while keeping warm with a light and elegant vintage sleeveless top from 1960.
This functional and minimalist sleeveless design only featured around its neckline and armholes a simple grosgrain ribbon in a contrasting colour. In the original version, published on an issue of Italian magazine Annabella in 1960, the top came in white with a gold/beige ribbon (the image doesn't make it justice...), but you can obviously change colours, opting for more vibrant hues and metallic fibers or for subdued, yet timeless, shades such as navy and black.
You need 200gr of wool, knitting needle 3 and 1,50m of grosgrain ribbon (3,5cm wide). The stitch for this top is mainly a stockinette stitch pattern (1 purl and 1 knit stitch). For the back, start from the bottom by casting 116 rib stitches and continue for 5 rows (for the front cast 132 rib stitches) then move onto the stockinette stitch pattern, adding one stitch on each side for 5 times.
Bear in mind that the pattern in this post (in cms; remember that "Dietro/Davanti" means "Back/Front") is for an Italian 46 size (size 14 in the UK; and 12 in the USA) and indicated to prepare the armhole around 34cm from the bottom on the back and on the front (by casting off 4 stitches) and start with the V-neckline on the front section of the top, so you may have to vary these measurements according to your size. Happy knitting!
