Every month we usually release a vintage pattern to encourage readers to experiment with their sewing skills. For this month, though, let's look at something new, though based on a vintage pattern, a dress from Alexander McQueen's S/S 20 collection by Sarah Burton, and to be more precise the opening look from that runway show.
As you may remember if you follow Burton and her work at McQueen's, in this collection she worked with linen from Northern Ireland, and created designs stripped down to the essentials.
This dress, a sort of reinterpretation of McQueen's A/W 2000 Eshu dress, is characterised by puffed sleeves, a pin-tucked bodice and an ample and billowy skirt.
Originally crafted in calico, the dress can obviously be reinvented in any fabric you prefer, just remember that the articulated puff-sleeves may pose some problems to amateur dress-makers, but you may take your time over the holidays (especially considering that many countries in Europe are opting for national lockdowns at Christmas to prevent the spread of Coronavirus so we may have time on our hands) and get some tips and help from friends.
The pattern (Download ALEXANDER_MCQUEEN_DOWNLOAD) was released on Christmas 2019 for SHOWstudio's Design Download project.
Launched in 2002, SHOWstudio's Design Download initiative encourages people to be creative while discovering also the technicalities of fashion. There are plenty of other patterns to play with if you've never tried any of these projects, by Yohji Yamamoto, Maison Martin Margiela, Stephen Jones, Gareth Pugh, Giles Deacon, Alexander McQueen, Antony Price, J.W. Anderson and Iris van Herpen among the others. So while we wait for the next Design Download to be released over Christmas, we can still discover previous fashion projects and reinvent them as much as we like.
