While votes are still being counted and at the moment it is still impossible to confirm who will be the next President of the United States, let's go back to 1956, for a post about politics and costumes.
In September of that year the New York Democrats organised over 1,000 parties to coincide with the speech of their candidate, Adlai Stevenson's TV address from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. For one of such parties, guests were asked to dress up as issues of the campaign.
Guests opted for costumes lampooning Eisenhower's "brinkmanship", John Foster Dulles (his secretary of state)'s "agonizing reppraisal" and their "massive retaliation" policy. There was also a costume inspired by the words of Eisenhower's advisor and former Arizona governor Howard Pyle, who stated "The right to suffer is one of the joys of a free economy." One of the costumes was instead a reference to the President's passion for golf. Eisenhower loved indeed this sport and played at the exclusive Burning Tree Club in Bethesda, Maryland (a club that had no black or female members...). Anybody up for a costume party inspired by politics and lampooning Donald Trump's administration, as we wait for the US election results to arrive?
