Super large tote bags have been spotted on more than just one runway and lookbook in the last few seasons. You may for example remember Jacquemus's S/S 19 maxi straw bags, Opening Ceremony's super large tote (View this photo) or Moschino's Pre-Fall 2020 accessories. Yet this highly impractical trend that also inspired big bag memes, with dedicated Instagram accounts featuring bags digitally altered to gargantuan proportions, is nothing new, but comes and goes in fashion (as everything else, you may argue...).
In 1959, for example, the brand Rosa Bonheur launched an extra large bag with a colourful print of turquoise, green and fuchsia fish and sea urchins with a rope strap. It was conceived as a summer bag that could contain all the necessary items to go to the beach.
For the fans of the trend, the bag was also accompanied by a line of matching accessories, such as scarves, that allowed the fashionistas of the time to create a coordinated and fun look.
