This is a rather unusual Easter break as the world is in a lockdown because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Some of us may be trying to take their minds off the latest news cooking, but also sewing, looking at fabrics (or shopping, obviously online, for fabrics) can be great options to relax a bit.
Vlisco has got an entire section of fabrics with Spring themes such as flowers and birds in bold and bright colours. One print in this section - the one known as "Happy Family" or "La Famille Coq" - actually looks particularly apt for Easter.
The Dutch wax fabric company dating back to 1846 (when Dutch entrepreneur Pieter Fentener van Vlissingen established a textile company named P.F. van Vlissingen & Co in the city of Helmond, The Netherlands), usually publishes on its site notes about the symbolisms behind specific fabrics, highlighting the narrative power of textiles hidden in patterns and motifs.
In this case the print hints at the archetypical African family with the maternal figure, the chicken, surrounded by her chicks and future chicks (the eggs). The father - the rooster - is nothing but trouble, that's why only his head is represented. The central position of the chicken in this print symbolises the fact that the woman who wears this fabric plays a pivotal role in the family. Enjoy this fabric and, whether you are in lockdown, quarantine or self-isolation, Happy Easter!
