Update: Due to the Coronavirus alert, the following event has been cancelled. An update will follow as soon as it is rescheduled.
In the last two years Japanese hair artist, head prop designer and wig maker Tomihiro Kono has come up with exhibitions, from Paris to Tokyo, that engaged the public in fun ways. In most cases he left a selection of his wigs on display in a gallery space hanging from the ceiling, as if they were floating in the air and visitors were invited to look at the designs as works of art, but also to wear them as if they were masks and radically transform themselves in this way.
At some of his events there weren't just the usual fashion crowds, but people of all ages - from children with their parents to more mature visitors. All of them were allowed to try on some of the wigs and they willingly did so, laughing about themselves, stilishly transforming themselves or temporarily trying on a new identity.
Tomihiro Kono will bring the interactive wig exhibition format to New York next week, with an installation of custom head props commissioned for the lobby garden at the Japan Society (333 East 47th Street New York, NY 10017). The exhibition is also a celebration of his new book, Personas 111 - The Art of Wig Making 2017-2020, published on 15th March on Konomad Editions.
