Personas 111 - The Art of Wig Making 2017-2020, the new book by Tomihiro Kono (河野富広) will be out tomorrow on Konomad Editions.
Three years ago the Japanese hair artist and head prop designer and wig maker started thinking about the function of hairpieces in the performing arts or for practical purposes, to cover for example partial hair loss, balding and thinning hair, and then realised he wanted to create different kinds of wigs.
"It is obviously possible to wear my wigs for these reasons," he states, "but I conceive them more as casual, fun and fashionable pieces. You can indeed wear them like a hat or cover with them only a part of your head, so that your natural hair shows underneath."
"My wigs are for everyone - with no distinction of gender and age. Wigs help us experiencing an instant transformation and discover multiple characters existing within ourselves, without taking the risk of changing our own hairstyles. We, as human beings, are all the same, but each of us has a unique personality and a transformative identity. My wigs are artefacts to encourage and foster a continuous transformation."
