It is always exciting finding unlikely or bizarre fashion correspondences between images from different historical periods. Check out, for example, this fashion illustration by Charles Martin published on the Gazette du Bon Ton in 1920 (No. 7, Pl. 49) featuring an extravagant hat in soft-paste porcelain and the plastic visor accessorising the 1966 Optical skirt suit by Yves Saint Laurent in the second image in this post. Their shapes look similar and their materials were rather unusual and futuristic (for their times).
The first image is taken from the Rijksmuseum archive and, if you like creating correspondences between vintage fashion illustrations and contemporary looks, you can check the digital archive at the museum and play with its Rijksstudio application.
If you feel really inspired, don't forget to take part in the Rijksstudio Award, the exciting competition that consists in creating something unique moving from the rich archives of the Rijksmuseum. There are all sorts of materials in the archive, so inspirations are practically endless and there's time till 27th February to submit your idea.
