In yesterday's post we looked at Iris van Herpen's latest Haute Couture designs: in her S/S 20 collection the designer turned some of her fabrics into living creatures and among her inspirations there were Hydrozoa. Related to jellyfish and corals and belonging to the phylum Cnidaria hydrozoans include freshwater jelly (Craspedacusta sowerbyi), freshwater polyps (Hydra), Obelia, Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis), chondrophores (Porpitidae), "air fern" (Sertularia argentea), and pink-hearted hydroids (Tubularia).
If you like this inspiration and you want to explore further the art and science connection, check again the lithographic and halftone prints featured in Kunstformen der Natur (you can download it here Download EHaeckel_Kunstformen_der_Natur) by German-born biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor, marine biologist, illustrator and artist Ernst Heinrich Haeckel (1834 - 1919) and let yourself be inspired by the art forms of nature.
Have a lovely research Friday (it may not erase the Brexit-induced depression, but studying and researching will take your mind off this dark moment of British history...).
