As the festive season approaches, we get literally bombarded with articles, posts on social media and promotional emails about ideas for party dresses. Shame the best ideas usually come from the past and aren't often available in the shops.
As seen in a previous post, looking in museum archives you may for example spot some beautiful Christmas inspired designs. Among such unique finds there is also Pierre Balmain's emroidery "Holly" cocktail dress from 1955.
The silhouette and the technique (three-dimensional embroidery) is reminiscent of another Balmain couture dress from 1953 that was in that case covered in pale pink flowers.
Yet the "Holly" dress is particularly striking as it features dense leaves scattered with sequins and scarlet berries embroidered by Lesage on a black velvet fabric by J. Léonard & Cie. Well, we may not be able to buy it, but we can still dream about it.
