In yesterday's post we looked at draping techniques, so let's continue the thread for another day with a vintage look. This practical dress was created in December 1960 by Italian designer Gigliola Curiel for the readers of Italian magazine Annabella.
The functional design in silk wool featured a minimalist decorative element around the waist area: the fabric was twisted and knotted, creating soft drape-like ripples. Readers could buy from the magazine an exclusive package that included the cutting pattern for this dress, the fabric to make it and an instruction manual.
The "twisted and knotted" trend may become fashionable again come next year: in Chalayan's Pre-Fall 2020 collection, inspired by Aboriginal Australians and their songlines and with some sparse references to the Far East, the designer included a few pieces with long ties that can be wrapped around the waist or the torso or can be used to create twisted and knotted fluid motifs that seem to melt into the fabric.
