Ten years ago I did an interview with glass jewellery designers Marina and Susanna Sent. Inspired by the principles of minimalist design, the Murano-based sisters are famous for creating glass dresses, corsets and jewellery pieces sold in shops all over the world.
The sisters are also well-known for necklaces and bracelets made with clear hand-blown glass baubles threaded onto a fishing line that evoke the magic of the sea.
As clients kept on asking for some of their most famous pieces like the glass baubles necklaces, they became signature designs for the two sisters and you can still find them in their shops in Venice (one is based near the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, in Dorsoduro 669, Campo San Vio, another it's nearer to St Mark's Square, in San Marco 2090, Ponte San Moisé, and there is another one in San Polo 70, Sotoportego dei Oresi).
The longevity of these simple and fragile yet striking pieces proves that following hip yet ephemeral trends is useless, while the real fashion trick is investing in genuine designs since, as the decades pass, they will reveal to be timeless investments.
