Let's close the Madame Grès thread that started on Friday by going back in time and rediscover through the cover of Italian magazine Annabella a design from 1949.
The dress in the picture in a plaid patterned woollen fabric was characterised by a collar with ample lapels. Rather than being draped, the fabric was gathered around the hips generating dynamism and movement and contrasting with the tight-fitting bustier and the cinched waist.
Though the dress in this image is almost 70 years old, its simple yet rigorously precise construction makes it still look stylishly elegant, don't you think so?
