Usually when we plan to learn a craft, we think about buying from a shop the tools and the materials we need. But there are those ones who actually start from scratch and make those tools. Italian artisan, embroiderer and shepherd Luigi De Angelis mainly works with wood and paper, creating artworks inspired by his Abruzzese origins and traditions.
Among the pieces he creates there are knitting needles and crocheting hooks: he usually sculpts them out branches, the forms of the tools are therefore inspired and dictated by the natural shape of the materials he is carving. At times he transforms the branches into animal-shaped needles – the crocheting hook at the very end of this post is for example inspired by a snake.
Apart from the fact that such needles and hooks can become interior design objects, they can actually be used for craft projects with a raw feel about them: since these tools are not produced industrially, the outcome of the project you're working on will depend not just from the yarns you're using and from your manual skills, but from the slightly imperfect size of the needles and hooks. At the same time, the results will be intriguing and have an additional artisanal touch about them.
