Paris Haute Couture Week is kicking off today and it's good to go back in time and rediscover what was fashionable in the French capital decades ago to see if it can inspire us or if we can make comparisons with what's on/what will be on the runways.
So what was trendy on 2nd July 1951? Robert Piguet had just launched two architectural suits, showed in these images taken from an Italian magazine of the time.
The first picture in this post shows a gray canvas suit with a simple skirt, but a rather intriguing jacket with round shoulders, and detachable peplum. An architectural motif defined the neckline and the breast area sculpting it and creating a hidden pocket that didn't disrupt the linearity of the jacket.
The second photograph features instead a yellow canvas suit in which Piguet played with the accumulation trick: the top featured short sleeves and ornamental buttons that created a double collar around the lapel, the skirt included instead a triple hemline that Piguet borrowed from the 1920s.
