Want something trendy but don't have the money to buy it? Well, try to remake it. Yes, technically you're infringing copyrights, but, since this would be a one off just for you and you wouldn't start an entire business based on that design, you can actually engage in such exercise.
Decades before the ready-to-wear revolution started, women who had dressmaking skills would take inspiration for clothes from films, copying ideas from the attire of actresses. You don't have any tailoring skills? Well, try to find things that can be easily replicated from the latest collections.
Check out for example Sonya Rykiel's multi-coloured dress from the Resort 2018 collection.
The house will be celebrating in 2018 the brand's 50th anniversary and its Resort collection, designed by Julie de Libran, is inspired by a Parisian woman moving to California and then returning to Paris with a bag and a head full of fresh inspirations. De Libran reworked in the collection some of Rykiel's trademark motifs, such as stripes, in an interesting way.
One flapper dress featured for example a crocheted section, but the bodice and the skirt were mainly composed of yarns that were left loose (though anchored to the crocheted section that seems made using a basic knot similar to the fish tail technique that kids use for rubber bands). This could be easily redone also by people with basic knitting and crocheting skills (or you can alter the idea by tweaking it here and there or maybe make a top rather than an entire dress using this technique).
Try the trick and you will soon want to make more stuff (the Internet is a great source to find ideas to reinvent - note "reinvent" and not copy), especially considering that handmaking a garment or an accessory can be a great way to get off your computer or your phone and react to the stressful digital world in which we live in. Have a lovely Sunday.
