Lucky ones among us are maybe heading to the beach for the holidays or the weekend. For those who are staying home, here's an inspiration to make them dream about the sea and summer: two colourful Cole of California designs from 1959.
Launched by trendsetter Fred Cole in 1923, the company was a new and revamped incarnation of his family's knit underwear firm. Cole brought excitement to swimwear: from 1936 the company collaborated with Hollywood costume designer Margit Fellegi (the equivalent for the Hollywood swimsuit of Edith Head for proper garments); in 1950 the brand signed Esther Williams to represent the company and five years later it started producing swimwear for Christian Dior.
The Cole of California products were mainly influenced and inspired by the lifestyle of sunny California, but the tunics in this picture (taken from an Italian magazine from 1959) show links in their graphic motifs and colour palette with art and in particular with Joan Miró. Shaped like a poncho, the design on the right could be converted into a beach towel as well. Have a lovely weekend!
