The Winners of Open Call, part of the public program of the exhibition "The Future of Fashion is Now" at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, were revealed last Sunday, final day of the exhibition.
Open Call asked professional and amateur designers to give shape to their own vision of the future of fashion. The organisers received 130 sketches and selected 14 works that were showcased at the Art Studio, the educational space of the museum.
Corsage-Studio won the Professional category with a design based on a bizarre concept, the enlargement of a hat to such proportions that it evolves into a garment. In this way an accessory turns into a body piece.
Fatima Khan won the "Amateur" Category with a design that revolved around the idea of minimalism and the possibility of sewing an absolute minimum amount of fabric. Khan carried out her exploration also to see what would happen to a dress pattern and therefore to the shape and final appearance of a garment, by reducing the amount of fabric involved.
Struck by the originality and silhouettes of the winning designs, the jury - comprising collector HanNefkens, curator José Teunissen and designer Antoine Peters - praised the high quality of the entries noting that the differences between amateurs and professionals were often hard to find.
Winners walked away with a prize of € 2,500 on behalf of the Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge foundation, that will allow them to produce a new design.
An additional prize was given to Jasna Rokegem who received over 2,400 online votes from the exhibition visitors. Over 83,000 fashion and art lovers visited the exhibition "The Future of Fashion is Now".
