Despite this may sound like blatant self-promotion since I'm the co-author with Sue-an van der Zijpp, (curator of present-day art at the Groninger Museum) of this book, the catalogue for "Marga Weimans - Fashion House", the first large-scale solo exhibition dedicated to the Rotterdam-based Dutch fashion designer (Groninger Museum, until 23 November 2014), this short post is actually a celebration of all the people who got on board this venture.
The volume (with support from the Foundation for the Stimulation of Creative Industry) features indeed an interview with Marga by Sue-an van der Zijpp that will grant access to Marga's personal world and a series of entries by myself accompanied by short interviews and feedbacks by architect Philip Beesley, Peter Pilotto's Chrisopher de Vos, Dutch shoe designer Jan Jansen, designer and 3D expert Bauke Knottnerus, architects Barend Koolhaas and Aura Luz Melis, CEO of Dover Street Market International Adrian Joffe, artist Charlie Koolhaas, writer and director of acclaimed documentary Versailles ‘73: American Runway Revolution (2012) Deborah Riley Draper, TwoPoints.Net's Martin Lorenz co-author of Pretty Ugly, artist and initiator of Freehouse Jeanne van Heeswijk, and augmented reality expert Sander Veenhof, co-founder with Luciano Pinna of AugmentNL.
The texts are illustrated with wonderful images of Marga Weiman's world, and of the installations that visitors will discover at the Groninger Museum. I particularly like the cover and a few collages inside the catalogue that were created by Marga, in collaboration with Jeroen Koolhaas, Barend Koolhaas and Aura Luz Melis.
While the book is for everybody and you can bet that even children will be spellbound by some of the fantastically monumental gowns by Marga, fans of the fashion and architecture connection will find it particularly stimulating as the catalogue is an attempt at finding correspondences between Marga Weimans' practice and an architect's.
Readers who are into architecture and art should check out the last part of the exhibition and the chapter entitled "The Invisible Dress" that focuses on an installation devised by Marga in collaboration with Rem Koolhaas' OMA*AMO. Enjoy!
"Marga Weimans - Fashion House" is at The Groninger Museum, The Netherlands, until 23rd November 2014. The Amsterdam Public Library is currently presenting a small-scale parallel exhibition, featuring a large part of the "Debut" collection. Marga Weimans will launch her new show, "Atelier", during Amsterdam Fashion Week, on 14th July 2014.
