On Wednesday international knitwear students from various colleges and universities converged in Florence for the 2014 edition of the Feel the Yarn competition organised during Pitti Filati (2 - 4 July 2014).
From today we will be looking at some of them in detail, and, since yesterday's post mentioned a kid's product, let's continue the thread by looking at a sweet and childish approach to knitwear via the creations (made with Filmar yarns) of Eri Naito.
A student from the Knitwear Design Course at the Fashion Technology Department of the Bunka Fashion College in Japan, Eri Naito moved from the "Earth" theme the Feel the Yarn organisers gave to students to step into the magic realm of fairies.
These invisible beings protect the earth and the environment and the designer decided to celebrate them in pastel coloured knitwear with inserts of hearts, stars, butterflies and messages in Japanese about love.
The designs seem to borrow from manga comics and series à la Creamy Mamy with some Sweet Lolita elements thrown in.
While this saccharine style may not be in the taste of many people, there are quite a few different techniques behind these two pieces as Naito designed a series of intarsia elements, three-dimensional patterns and lace-like details (not to mention the Japanese message on the back of one dress...). Cosplayers rejoyce: this may be your ideal knitwear designer.
