Yesterday's news about the Mayor of Venice being arrested together with other politicians in a bribery investigation over the delayed construction of the city's underwater flood barriers (Moses barriers) weren't the sort of positive auspices the organisers of the 14th International Venice Architecture Exhibition were hoping for.
Besides, with a section of the Arsenale celebrating Italy and featuring a few projects focusing on criminality in Italy or mentioning high-profile public works that ended up being total disasters with massive wastes of public money, the mood was a bit somber (and let's not even mention the recent arrests for corruption at next year’s Milan Expo...).
The only person who seemed rather positive was the Chairman of the Biennale, Rem Koolhaas who was busy since the early morning, rushing around and ensuring everything was ready to go. More about the Biennale will follow in future posts.
