British fashion designer Jamie Bruski Tetsill, founder of Glasgow-based label Shapes of Things Ltd, launched the brand's first official collection of functional kids apparel at the 79th Pitti Bimbo in June 2014.
The SOTLTD collection includes casual jackets, shorts, trousers, sweats, hoodies and shirts and is characterised by eye-catching vinyl appliquéd geometric shapes in bold neon colours, holographic and glittery textures and surreal and fun pockets shaped like geometrical figures.
"I'm first and foremost a colour designer and these textures were inspired by all the plasticky surfaces that influenced me when I was a kid. While being a subconscious reference to the Bauhaus that remains a firm inspiration in my work, geometrical shapes are a way to educated kids, while offering them the chance of being creative," states Tetsill.
The geometric shapes are arty and educational and promote the unifying and dynamic power of geometry with a twist on optical art à la Victor Vasarely. All the designs are entirely made in the UK employing ethically sourced organic cotton.
The youngest of five siblings, as a child Jamie Bruski Tetsill was obsessed with art, building, constructing and assembling, and would conjure up his own colourful and unique world in his bedroom. As he grew up, Tetsill injected his passion for art, materials and construction in his fashion, accessories and interior design pieces.
"When I create a piece, I try to envisage who will become the kid who will wear my designs - architect, artist, cartoonist, critic, digital maverick, director, musician, painter, photographer or stylist? Whoever they will choose to be, I hope they will experience the joy of achievement through creativity."
Shapes of Things Ltd Kids is also a multidisciplinary platform: Tetsill has recently started developing projects with charities to launch art projects that could act as therapy for disadvantaged children. Every collection will be accompanied by an engaging event organised with a different charity to educate, inspire and help young people.
After Pitti Bimbo, Shapes of Things Ltd Kids will be celebrating sport, health and fashion with dedicated workshops and a pop up shop at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland (23rd July - 3rd August 2014).
