Visitors to the 14th Venice International Architecture Exhibition will have noticed how there is a big change this year space-wise: the "Monditalia" section of the event involves indeed all the sectors of the Biennale - Dance, Music, Theatre and Cinema. There is a particularly intense dialogue between the 9th International Festival of Contemporary Dance and the Architecture Exhibition.
The dance programme is rich and involves 30 choreographers in dialogue with 20 spaces: performances take place in outdoor city squares, inside theatres and, continuously, on seven different stages inside the Arsenale.
Here visitors can see choreographers and dancers interacting continuously on the various stages surrounded by architectural installations. While the dancers engage in a dialogue with the spaces where they perform, visitors can witness the construction of a choreography, ponder a bit about the relation between body and architecture or simply take a rest.
"Danze leggermente diverse" (Slightly different dance actions) and "Danze per capire" (Dance actions to understand; both until 29th June) are among the most interesting performances: both feature visually impaired Giuseppe Comuniello, but the former takes place on a random basis and on randomly chosen stages with Comuniello as soloist, and the choreography is inspired by imaginary figures borrowed from fairy tales, story and paintings; the latter involves small groups of visually impaired and sighted dancers exploring the spaces of the biennale with their bodies.
The dance shows will culminate in July with a special performance, "Il Vangelo secondo Matteo" (The Gospel according to Saint Matthew), an ambitious project by Virgilio Sieni, director of the Dance Sector. The performance consists in 27 choreographic actions divided in 3 cycles containing 9 scenes each and featuring 180 performers, coming from all over Italy (from 4th to 18th July).
The best thing about this performance is that, apart from interacting with the surrounding spaces in the Arsenale, it features dancers of all ages, from professional performers to parents with their children, elderly people, and a selection of craftsmen as well. Live music for "Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo" will be provided by the Corale G. Savani, that you can see rehearsing in this short video.
The connection between the dance exhibition and fashion? All the activities of the Dance Sector for the year 2014 are supported by the Fondazione Prada, which, we hope, will keep on supporting such projects involving also ordinary people, rather than just funding exhibitions featuring pretentious artists...
