There were quite a few programmes around the '70s that focused on developing innovative technological applications for chemical fibres. Construction processes, new techniques and the properties of different materials were the key elements of these studies.
Clino Trini Castelli and Massimo Morozzi (co-founder of Archizoom Associati, Morozzi died last month) were among the designers and researchers who developed some of these studies. The following picture shows indeed one of their research for a new super-fabric for Louis Vuitton (1976) made of lengths of Kevlar covered in spiral polyester.
Re-reading about these studies makes you actually wonder why famous brands and fashion houses seem to be more interested in the superficial aspects of the business. While they are all happy to show us the next celebrity wearing a design gown, the high profile blogger smiling at the camera or the new advertising campaign, they never mention their innovative researches into materials.
Is this because they are so secretive about these projects or because they are not investing any time and money in this aspect of their businesses? Guess it would prove intriguing to concentrate once again on the more serious aspects of the fashion industry - you can bet that this would also help creating further highly qualified jobs.
