Google Doodle celebrates today the queen of opera, Maria Callas. Anna Maria Cecilia Sophia Kalogheròpoulou was indeed born 90 years ago, on 2nd December 1923. Callas' life is very much linked not just with opera, music and talent, but with style as well.
In 1953 Maria Callas appeared visibly thinner than on her debut, and gossips spread at La Scala about the diet she had followed. Among the “authors” of her transformation into a sophisticated woman there was also an Italian designer, Elvira Leonardi Bouyeure, better known as Biki, who dressed the singer for the next 25 years.
The opera singer and the designer (shown in the picture posted here) became close friends and Biki would send Maria Callas dresses and accessories accompanied by little numbers and booklets that showed her how to match the various garments and items.
Biki was just one of Callas' fans in Italy: among her supporters there was also writer, poet and director Pier Paolo Pasolini, who selected Callas to star in his film Medea. Pasolini defined Callas as an extremely modern woman, disguising in her heart an ancient, mythic and mysterious creature who hid terrible interior conflicts.
