The women portrayed in the pictures and photoshoots by Eugenio Recuenco are at times intriguingly sensual heroines, at others they are the protagonists of dark fairy tales à la Angela Carter. Yet in all his images, Recuenco injects a sense of sublime mystery, while trying to build a sort of gothic narrative with a cinematic and pictorial twist. A recently published volume by teNeues entitled Revue celebrates the Madrid photographer.
The images featured in the book - the first one celebrating his work - chronicle his activity as photographer for fashion and style magazines (Recuenco has so far worked for Vogue, GQ, Madame Figaro, Vanity Fair, Stern, Twill and Zink, just to mention a few). The recipient of multiple awards and invited to take part in various exhibitions in his home country and abroad, Recuenco has put together a large portfolio.
The pictures featured in Revue strike the readers at different levels: younger fashion fans may be fascinated by the carefully arranged and fantastically magical sets and by the beautiful and enigmatic models populating them, but connoisseurs of art will definitely spot more intricate references in his works.
Recuenco is known indeed for approaching his shoots from a complex point of view and creating elaborate scenery with multiple references to art history, paintings and artists. Quite a few of his fashion shoots call to mind portraits by Renaissance painters such as Il Bronzino, others seem to be chiaroscuro exercises inspired by Caravaggio.
Though Recuenco mainly works in the publishing and advertising fields (he has worked with international brands such as Boucheron, Magnum, Diesel, Nina Ricci, L'Oreal, Custo and Loewe), he has also filmed a few shorts and is increasingly developing an interest in cinema, so, who knows, the next book about him may tackle his films. Revue is accompanied by an exhibition at CWC Gallery, Berlin, until 16th November 2013.
Revue by Eugenio Recuenco is out now on teNeues.
