This was a fantastic essay in it's entirety. I run a monthly film club in London and on Wednesday am screening Umberto Lenzi's version of Kriminal and talking about the history of the comics scene and character appropriation in Italy up into the 1960's, so stumbled across this while searching out more info on Diabolik. It's fascinating seeing the continued impact of Bava's film on the fashion world (which I'm fairly ignorant of) and having the creation of Diabolik laid out in an article that isn't condescending to the comics. This is the best thing I've read in ages.
