I'm going to take a break from the Pitti reviews for today and, as a follow-up to yesterday's post, I'm including here some pictures of the raw linen models for theatre costumes made by the Polimoda students. These are obviously copies of already existing designs made by the students as an exercise.
There is a bit of a mix of different times, plays, novels and films in this corridor of the school, from La Locandiera and Casanova to Madame Bovary. I'm posting just a few images, though the selection was wider than this. The pieces show how the students are learning a lot about the basics of fashion, and in particular about pattern cutting, recreating specific costumes.
It is indeed appalling how too many fashion designers do not really know anything about pattern cutting and how quite a few students decide to enroll in a fashion design course maybe thinking that the life they will lead one day will be a veritable orgy of glittering parties, smiling and endless successes.
Costume design could be a viable career, even though it is currently being infiltrated by trendy fashion designers who do not have a clue about the main principles of this fascinating art but are still trying their hand at making costumes for the big screen, the stage or even ballet and the opera (the latest ones being the Rodarte sisters, currently working on the next LA Philharmonic production of Mozart's Don Giovanni...).
After all, opting for a job as a pattern cutter wouldn't be such a bad idea, besides it's definitely a less saturated market.

The design and cuts are really good but, I'm sorry, the fabric is just awful :( But overall - great designs!

They were actually made in cheap waste linen canvas as a training session for the pattern cutting class.
