Traditional Romanian costumes can be a complicated business to the eye of a foreigner. With 7 ethnographic regions, each with its own traditions and style of costumes (directly connected with factors such as geographic and climatic conditions and local occupations), there is a lot to discover about the various costumes.
As a tourist you can learn more about the different costumes at Bucharest's Muzeul Taranului Roman (the Romanian Peasant Museum - more about it later).
The museum owns an excellent collection of crafts and costumes (and even original wooden constructions rebuilt inside the museum spaces).
Men and women's costumes are characterised by white background and colorfully embroideries and completed by elaborate accessories.
I picked two examples, a woman's headdress that seems to have the fleshy consistency of a mushroom's gills and a man's leather belt that looks as solid as an armour.
My research trip to Romania was made possible through a journalistic grant from the Institutul Cultural Român (ICR - Romanian Cultural Institute), Bucharest.
