Looking for the perfect Christmas present for a knitwear enthusiast? The Fashionary X Sibling Boxset may be just what you’re looking for and here’s what Penter Yip, the designer behind the sketchbook, told me during an interview for Zoot Magazine.
Penter Yip, the fashion and graphic designer behind the Fashionary, definitely hasn’t been resting on his laurels. In just two years he developed a men and women’s wear version of his accaimed sketchbook filled in with pages featuring join the dot-like templates created with fashion designers in mind, launching in summer an A4 version of the notebook.
Now, almost as a tribute to all those contemporary young designers reinventing knitwear, Yip teamed up with London-based knitwear trio Sibling (Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery), coming up with the “Fashionary X Sibling” Boxset. The latter includes a knitted iPad pouch, a Fashionary notebook with a matching screenprinted cover and a handbook featuring basic information on knitting, including useful details on yarns and fabrics, loops, stitches, patterns and needle sizes.
“Sibling is one of our favorite brands because they create interesting knits, very different from more traditional knitwear brands,” Yip told Zoot Magazine. “First they came up with an idea of a knitwear book package that included a small knit bag which just fit the Fashionary, but, as the project went on, we decided to go further and turn it into a pouch for an iPad. It actually turned out as a great idea since most ordinary iPad pouches are boring, while Sibling managed to make this product look very exciting.”
Sibling also added to the pattern for the Fashionary their surreal details: among the bright yellow and red leopard spots the trio developed for the iPad pouch and sketchbook cover it’s indeed possible to detect their trademark skulls. “Sibling’s original skull leopard pattern is black, but we wanted to make it more refreshing and unique, so we changed it to red to make the skull stand out,” Yip explains.
The designers also provided some useful information about the industry for the knitting handbook.
“Sibling’s customers have a rebellious spirit, they are into the unique and the unusual, in a nutshell they are into products that can genuinely make a difference," continues Yip. "At the Fashionary we are into the same things and we have a passion for creating modern and functional products tailored to the needs of modern fashion designers.”
There are no further plans for immediate collaborations at the moment, Yip reveals, but you can bet that something exciting will definitely happen Fashionary-wise in 2012.
The “Fashionary X Sibling” Limited Boxset (in just 400 copies) is available now (Retail Price: USD 112.00). If you’re not a knitwear enthusiast but you’re looking for something special for the festive season, you can opt for the special Christmas version of the sketchbook, the Fashionary Red (USD 24.90).
