Eyes - and in particular dolls' eyes - always fascinated me, it must be a thing I developed in childhood for two main reasons.
The first reason is linked with childhood, erm, "games": while I tried to destroy his robots, my brother used indeed to damage my dolls' irresistible blue eyes, making me extremely angry.
The second reason is a gold pendant with a mobile blue eye that I used to see many women wearing during the celebrations for the feats in honour of Saint Lucy (patron saint of sight) in my parternal grandparents' village of Capracotta.
As time passed two further eye-related images stuck to my mind: a surreal Schiaparelli-inspired blouse donned by chronic gossiper Sylvia in George Cuckor's The Women (a reference to the fact that she keeps an alert eye on everything that goes on around her to make sure she can turn it into the next gossip...) and a shot of the film La Antena (The Aerial, 2007) by Esteban Sapir with lots of eyes spying upon the voiceless protagonists of the film.
I mixed in my mind all these inspirations together and came up with this new necklace, my latest project and the second one inspired by La Antena (but more may follow...). To make it I used a bit of felt and a pile of vintage dolls' eyes of the type my brother used to damage when we were kids.
Scary? Well, I was actually aiming for a surreal effect that will hopefully bring a smile to the faces of the people who will see me wearing it.
