In yesterday's post I looked at traditional Japanese textiles through Tim Parry-Williams' lecture. Let's remain for another day in Japan to look at a different topic with the help of another lecturer, Holly C Price Alford.
During the "Trans/National Clothing Conference" at Bath Spa University Holly - who is an expert also about the criminalisation of Hip Hop culture (and - take note - she is still one of the very few people who carries out researches about the influence of African American culture on fashion) - investigated the influence of Hip Hop fashion in other countries.
When Japanese youth embraced Hip Hop this style also prompted young people to express their dissatisfaction or explore wider issues such as injustice within their own society.
While analysing the continuative influence of Hip Hop urban style on Japanese youth, Holly moves on to wonder if people adopting it understand the culture which, through clothing, they attempt to imitate. To discover more about this fascinating topic, click play and enjoy Holly's lecture.
