Miuccia Prada is back today as the protagonist of my I.P.F.O. (Identified Pilfered Fashion Object) columns (if it goes on like this I may as well start a series of columns entirely dedicated to her pilfering inspirations…).
I’m still convinced that Miu Miu’s A/W 2011-12 collection was mainly inspired by Joan Crawford in Michael Curtiz’s Mildred Pierce as stated in a previous post, and the advertising campaign shot by Bruce Weber featuring Hailee Steinfeld in a ‘40s hairstyle and wearing glittery gold booties-cum-sandals looking like Mildred’s eldest daughter, materialistic monster Veda, confirmed my suspicions.
Yet the more I looked at the dress with sequinned birds featured in one of the ads, the more I thought I had seen it somewhere else. I eventually remembered where I had seen it this morning, so I thought I would share it: a sleeveless dress with prints of birds appeared indeed in Long Pants by Frank Capra.
Yes, you could argue that the birds are printed and the dress was in perfect '20s style in this case, but there is a strange similarity between the two designs (also considering there are often cinematic references in Prada and Miu Miu’s collections). Damn, in a way it's annoying to know that Miuccia has got my same films in her personal collection, but she's so much better than me at making money out of them.
