My mind (and my time) have been largely taken in the last few weeks by different projects.
One of them involves the background research to write some notes for an exhibition I’ll tell you more about in my future posts.
A part of this research focuses on painter, sculptor, fashion, set and costume designer Ernest Henry Michahelles, better known as Thayaht.
Today as an inspiration I’m posting here a sketch by Thayaht that from its Art Deco/Erté-like style can be dated around 1920.
The drawing - still signed as TAYAT - proves the artist, who left a few sketches for costumes designed with no real purpose or commission in mind but for his pleasure (this could have been the sketch for an animal or a fairy tale creature for example) was interested in theatre and ballet, two passions that were maybe inspired to him by Diaghilev and his Ballets Russes (the costume in this sketch shows some undeniable connections with Bakst's striking use of rich colours).
