I expected to see a lot of different works at the Venice Art Biennale, but surely not a Schiaparelli dress.
This is actually not the original black crepe "Skeleton" dress from Schiap's 1938 Circus Collection with its iconic padded ribs, spine and leg bones, but a work of art entitled "Flow my tears I" by Mai-Thu Perret.
The piece consists in a steel and foam mannequin with a glass head wearing a replica of Schiap’s skeleton dress.
Born in Geneva in 1976, Mai-Thu Perret has become known for mixing different media together, from sculpture to painting, video and installation and blending together feminist politics with avant-garde aesthetics.
I must admit that while I felt happy at seeing this iconic piece that Salvador Dali helped creating integrated in a contemporary work of art, I don't think this could be considered as a cutting edge avant-garde piece. I mean, the original dress by Schiap was and will remain an avant-garde piece, but could a copy of the same dress worn by a beautiful mannequin be considered as a work of art?
