It’s easy to find antiquarian markets/shops in Italy selling old fashion or women’s magazines. At times they can be expensive (€15-€20 per issue, especially if they are from the ‘30s), but, if you are lucky, you will find a stall holder willing to bargain a bit on the price and get a discount, especially if you’re buying not just one issue, but quite a few of them.
I recently stumbled upon one of these stall holders keen to bargain with me a bit and managed to dig out of his piles of dusty and vintage papers and mags a few gems from the mid-‘40s and early ‘50s (for only €1 per issue, a total bargain).
I started leafing through my pile of treasures as soon as I got back home and found very inspiring images and ideas. Yet I’m definitely not the only one who probably managed to get a hold of these magazines and who thought, while leafing through them, of having found absolutely amazing ideas and inspirations.
In fact I’m sure Miuccia Prada has got some of these magazines as well. In one of them – an issue of Italian magazine Annabella from December 1956 – I found an image of a model in a printed velvet dress in a green, black and gold "Baroque frame print" (the magazine doesn't mention the designer who made it) that calls to mind a print featured in Prada’s Spring/Summer 2011 collection.
In a way it's quite funny how Miuccia Prada is becoming the protagonist of my I.P.F.O. stories, maybe if I look really hard I will spot the next Prada/Miu Miu collection in the pages of my old magazines? Well done to me then for having bargained my way out of a little pile of vintage mags for almost nothing. Unfortunately, though, Miuccia must have got there first…
