A few weeks ago French channel Stylia celebrated Vogue Paris’ 90th anniversary broadcasting a 56-minute documentary entitled "Les années Vogue" (directed by the mighty Loïc Prigent) that featured stories and footage from the making of the most spectacular numbers in the history of the magazine plus interviews with famous photographers such as Mario Testino, models like Claudia Schiffer and Linda Evangelista and various designers, from Karl Lagerfeld to Christian Lacroix and Sonia Rykiel.
Vogue TV recently uploaded on its page some interesting videos and extracts from the documentary and I’m embedding some of them in this post.
As you can see, most of the illustrated covers are extremely beautiful. The first Vogue TV video embedded in this post features some interesting images regarding Orientalist fashion, but my favourite clip remains the one about the April 1933 issue that featured an article about “Gretagarbisme”, that is the influence of Greta Garbo in fashion (“Le Gretagarbisme est la maladie en vogue”), since it reminds me of its earlier Italian equivalent, the borellismo.
My favourite cover is instead the one from the November 1936 issue, that also features an article entitled “Révolte contre la Monotonie” (this should actually be the motto of every fashion designer...) and a piece on the return of the feather on hats.
The January 1945 issue focused instead on the role of women in the war, with illustrations by different fashion houses inspired by patriotic colours, plus an extensive feature on trendy shades and silhouettes as suggested by Balenciaga, Lanvin and Schiaparelli.
Despite these videos are very short, they provide very interesting insights in the history of fashion and I’m sure many illustrators and designers will find some inspirations in the pages of these early Vogue issues.
