Eyewear designer Ralph Vaessen and his cinematic frames already appeared in a previous post in this blog.
A new mention is due, though, after seeing some of the designs from his next collection.
While at the Pitti Ralph showed me quite a few new frames and, while I played at being a stylishly intellectual diva from a 60s black and white film for a few minutes, one pair of sunglasses literally caught my eye (pun intended...).
The sunglasses in question (this model is called "Lies" - if I don't go wrong) are characterised by a squarish horn frame that gives them an architectural touch and are sold (like all Vaessen's frames) in a special solid horn and wood box.
Quite a few designs from Ralph's 2011 look book - and in particular models such as "Katarina", "Florian", "Sam", "Lucas" and "Bram" - made me think about specific stylish films à la Fellini's 8 1/2.
Ralph's eyewear appears in Paula van der Oest's film Black
Butterflies, due to be released this Autumn.
The film is a romantic epic based on the story of Apartheid-era South African poet Ingrid Jonker, played by Carice van Houten, and also stars Liam Cunningham and Rutger Hauer.
This is not the only connection Ralph currently has with the world of cinema.
While his frames are favoured by different actors, actresses and directors, Anton Corbijn, David Lynch and John Malkovich donated a pair of Ralph Vaessen sunglasses to Door Een Bekende Bril, a charity project working on preventing blindness in the Philippines.
Ralph and his model kindly posed for me and, for a short while, we all pretended we were on the set of a stylish film rather than at a busy trade fair.Member of the Boxxet Network of Blogs, Videos and Photos
