I analysed the connection between fashion and costume design in a previous post on this blog and updated it a few days ago briefly writing about Christian Lacroix’s costumes for Agrippina.
It's time to rediscover the old connection again today. Opera and fashion fans will indeed get a thrill tonight as Giuseppe Verdi’s Attila, featuring costumes and sets by Miuccia Prada and architectural duo Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, debuts at New York’s Metropolitan Opera.
You can read more about the opera in my article for Dazed Digital, but I must admit that, while the costumes allow you to make interesting comparisons with previous collections by Prada and Miu Miu, in this case I’m more interested in Herzog & de Meuron’s work.
The Basel-based architectural firm founded in 1978 made their theatrical design debut in 2006 with a production of Tristan und Isolde for the Berlin State Opera, so this is not the first time they collaborate with an opera performance, but for Verdi's Attila they opted for a post-Apocalyptic set with the main characters moving among rubble and ruins.
Opera fans based around the world will be able to enjoy the March 6 matinee of Verdi's Attila, broadcast live over the Toll Brothers-Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network and the Metropolitan Opera Radio on SIRIUS channel 78 and XM channel 79.
