If you are a dancer or you’re passionate about the performing arts and are planning to go on holiday to Venice, try to make sure that your visit there coincides with a workshop or a seminar organised at the Centro Teatrale di Ricerca (CTR, Theatre Research Centre), located inside the former convent of St Cosma and St Damiano,on the Giudecca island.
The centre is under the artistic director of costume designer Sonia Biacchi, who makes extraordinary creations. When she first started working on her costumes, Biacchi was fascinated by Oskar Schlemmer and by his work associated with the Bauhaus movement.
Biacchi usually starts designing her costumes by planning modern shapes and silhouettes, then she moves onto experimenting with materials, bearing in mind that the final costumes must be wearable and flexible three-dimensional structures that can alter the wearers’ body and the space surrounding them. A while back, even Pierre Cardin bought two costumes by Biacchi that are nowadays exhibited in his Parisian museum.
You can read more about Biacchi’s work in my interview with her on Dazed Digital, while you can keep updated with the workshops in programme at the CTR on its site.
