Easter approaching, temperatures on the rise and the sun shining makes you feel Spring has finally arrived.
Apart from being a symbol of Spring and reflecting the beauty of nature, butterflies are conventionally considered symbols of resurrection and eternal life and also represent freedom and creative thinking.
It's easy to understand then why, throughout the decades, many designers took inspirations from their colours, shapes and ethereal movements to create beautiful motifs for their collections.
One of the most original examples was Schiaparelli’s Spring/Summer 1937 "Papillons" collection that featured jackets with butterfly-shaped buttons.
A cute idea to reproduce that jacket and celebrate spring might be getting a few Auds' Schiaparelli-inspired butterflies and decorate an old garment or your hair with them.
Auds is the new accessory label by Audrey Ang. A graduate of Central St Martins, Ang never actually planned to turn into an accessory designer and worked for quite a few years as a womenswear designer for Yohji Yamamoto. Fifteen years ago a sling bag she made while working as a researcher for the famous Japanese designer, sparked an Audrey Ang mania and since then her fan base has considerably grown including also many celebrities, while the list of her stockists has expanded.
Auds’ latest collection is perfect for Spring and features beetles, thunderbolts, geometric-shapes and Japanese knots made combining together eclectic materials such as plastic, mirrors and hair. The neon colours of the acrylic “Love” and “Hate” knuckledusters contrast with the mirror-like pieces, giving the collection a pop edge.
Fashion and art lovers will find a wide range of choice from Schiap's butterflies to Jean Cocteau’s hands that call to mind Berenice Abbott’s late 20s photograph of the French artist; from the black, red and mirror bangles that remind of Man Ray’s 1926 picture of writer and publisher Nancy Cunard with her arms stacked with bangles to smoker curls designed in tribute to Anaïs Nin.
A few pieces by Auds are accessorised with a hairdresser curl clip at the back, but also have holes that allow the wearer to use them as pendants and make in this way a strong statement when and how it pleases them.
