Spring makes you long for fancy, colourful, comfortable and super original shoes and if you're after something really extraordinary and unique, you should maybe opt for Giovanna Zanella’s designs.
Zanella studied under the direction of Venetian footwear artist Rolando Segalin, famous for recreating classic shoes from lost times using handmade old wooden lasts.
Zanella learnt how to make perfect handmade shoes by Segalin, but successfully managed to find her own style, launching her own accessory (bags, scarves and necklaces) and clothes lines. She also worked with famous designers such as Issey Miyake, and these experiences helped the Venetian artisan developing her skills and applying them to more cutting edge and contemporary designs.
This young artist who likes to describe herself as an artisan rather than a designer, is very much inspired by various materials from wood to iron and plastic, though leather is definitely her favourite one. She indeed learnt how to bend, fold and pleat it, creating amazing 3D geometrical motifs and details.
Selecting the right material for a pair of shoes is of vital importance for Zanella as the chosen material represents a sort of synthesis of her taste and design needs. Colours are also very important as they help the artisan creating her unique geometrical designs.
For Spring her window shop in Venice’s Calle Carminati 5641 is simply bursting with joy and new designs (for both men and women) in bright shades of yellow, soft grey, white or orange, decorated with striking leather details, such as flowers or architectural motifs.
If you're looking for something timeless and not extremely expensive, try Zanella's leather gaiters with a simple row of buttons, they are the sort of ideal items to renew an old pair of shoes or to add a touch of classic elegance to more modern designs.
