If you’re in a beauty and photography withdrawal and you happen to pass through Milan, stop at the exhibition “Extreme Beauty in Vogue”.
Organised at the Palazzo della Ragione, just a few minutes from the Duomo, the exhibition features a series of photographs that tackle the theme of beauty and how it has changed throughout the decades.
The 89 images exhibited are taken by some of the most legendary photographers such as George Hoyningen-Huene, Edward Steichen, Erwin Blumenfeld, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Annie Leibovitz, Steven Klein and Irving Penn.
Though the beauty and poetry of some of the early images in black and white such as George Hoyningen-Huene’s “Modern Mariners” and Edward Steichen’s “Your Hands” absolutely mesmerised me, my favourite section was the one dedicated to Irving Penn.
In some of his images, Penn literally erased the faces of the models, covering them with candied fruit, hair or an old rugby ball, transforming, altering and questioning in this way the notion of beauty.
